Dying Matters Week takes place 14th-20th May and aims to encourage people to talk openly about death, dying and bereavement.
Teams from across Saint Catherine’s are getting involved in a variety of activities throughout the week to encourage discussions about ‘death, dying and bereavement’.
Monday – Our social worker John Gready is running a session for patients and carers during the Education Session at the Wellbeing Centre, 1-2pm.
Wednesday – We are involved with an event at the Crematorium talking about pre bereavement counselling and Hospice Services. This is running from 10-12noon and 2-4pm.
Thursday – from 8pm there is a free showing of Book of Life, kindly put on by Moonlight Cinemas here at our Chapel Garden at Saint Catherine’s. Everyone is welcome. Staff will be available to talk to people about death, dying and bereavement before, during or after the film.
We also wanted to share this video link with you. It is from Kathy Mannix and talks very simply, clearly and gently about dying.
Free screening of Book of Life
This year Saint Catherine’s have decided to do something a little different to raise awareness for the campaign. On Thursday 17th May after 8pm Saint Catherine’s will host an outdoor showing of the movie ‘The Book of Life’. The Book of Life is a children’s animated film which covers the Mexican holiday the ‘Day of the Dead’ and includes the different worlds of the ‘land of the remembered’ and the ‘land of the forgotten’.
Louise Barnes, Saint Catherine’s ‘‘everybody is welcome to attend the event, we thought the film would give people the opportunity to talk about death and dying and feel more comfortable about approaching the topic. There will be staff on hand to offer support and advice and provide information on planning for the future.’’
Saint Catherine’s are thrilled that Moonlight Cinema have offered to support Saint Catherine’s with this event. Sophie Baggallay, Moonlight Cinema said "Moonlight Cinema are delighted to be supporting Saint Catherine's as our Charity of the Year 2018. The hospice is close to the hearts of all the Moonlight team and we are very excited to be able to give something back after all the amazing work that they do supporting local families."
The event will take place in Saint Catherine’s courtyard, tickets are free but you must be booked on to the event in advance. If you would like to attend the showing please contact Trish Atkinson at Saint Catherine’s on 01723 351421 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
