Emma’s fundraising story

April 4th 2019

A Scarborough businesswoman is honouring her mum’s memory by taking on a major challenge in aid of Saint Catherine’s.

Emma Winton (pictured second from left), 35, of Eastfield, is trekking the Canadian Rockies in June next year and will wear a T-shirt every day featuring a picture of her beloved mum Maureen.

Maureen was cared for by Saint Catherine’s before she passed away in 2017 – and since then the whole family has vowed to support the hospice and keep her memory alive.

The family set up A.F.5 Design and Print Ltd in Scarborough, which donates 10% of everything sold to Saint Catherine’s. Everything about the business, including the logo, was designed to represent Maureen (pictured left).

Emma, a mum of four, said: “The minute I saw the trek advertised I knew I wanted to do it. I’m expecting it to be an eye-opening experience.

“It’s a positive goal to have and a very personal thing for me. I’m looking forward to the journey and talking to people about their loved ones too.

“The only thing is I’m not much of a camper! But I’m not worried about all the walking.”

She added that the care her mum received has fuelled her passion to raise as much money as possible.

Emma explained: “Mum’s wish was to die at home and she was granted that wish. As a family we were so grateful for the amazing care she received – we couldn’t have asked for any more.

“I just feel like cancer didn’t have the last word on our mum.”

Emma’s plan for the trek is to get T-shirts printed up for each day of the week-long trek with a photo of her mum and logos of businesses who would like to sponsor her. She is aiming to raise more than £2,500.

She said: “Mum was always full of fun.  I hope people sense that through the garments we are creating. She would have absolutely of loved every second of what we have created with this business and working together as a family.

On the trek plans she added: “I’ve had lots of positive feedback already. I feel very blessed that people are getting behind me.”
