Ryedale business names Saint Catherine’s as its charity of the year

April 7th 2020

Karro Food Limited in Malton has chosen Saint Catherine’s as its charity of the year.

The hospice is close the hearts of the team, as Emma, the beloved daughter Dawn and David Bottomley, who work at Karro, passed away at Saint Catherine’s last year aged just 26.

Earlier this year, staff held a bake sale as Dawn is a keen baker and has even featured on The Great British Bake Off – An Extra slice.

What started as a one-off will now become a regular event and Karro will also be holding dress-down days as well as other fundraising activities later in the year. Since January, the team have raised an amazing £988.17.

Lauren Dineley, Human Resources Manager at Karro Food Limited, said “Saint Catherine’s provides vital support to families in our local community and as an organisation Karro is proud to support such a worthwhile cause which is so close to our hearts.”

Dawn Bottomley said: “We made a promise to Emma that she would never be on her own and we were only able to keep that promise due to the fantastic facilities at the hospice.

“We were able to take turns staying the night in Emma’s room. We loved these sleepovers and tried to make them as normal as possible, watching movies and having pamper nights.

“We are so grateful to all the nurses and staff for the care and support given to Emma and ourselves. It’s not just the medical care that Emma received but the little extras which made Emma feel special. We were all made us feel so welcome – nothing was ever too much trouble.

“When it was Emma’s birthday we heard a knock on the door and were greeted with smiling faces as a trolley was wheeled in with glasses and bottles of prosecco for us all to enjoy.

“Over the last few months we have been thinking of ways in which we could give something back to the hospice as a way of saying thank you. Many of the staff at Karro know first-hand the fantastic support and care the hospice offers and want to support Saint Catherine’s as much as possible.”

Sian Cromack, hospice fundraiser, said: “We are delighted that Karro Food Limited has chosen us as its charity of the year. The team have made a brilliant start and we look forward to working with them as the year continues.”
