Hospice Care Week 2021

October 6th 2021

This week is Hospice Care Week – a chance to spread the word and raise awareness of the amazing work done by hospices all across the UK.

Hospice UK chief executive Tracey Bleakley said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has had, and continues to have, a huge impact on the hospice and end of life sector. Hospices have had to rapidly adapt – working non-stop to create new, innovative services to keep patients safe and connected, both at home and in inpatient units.

“From setting up virtual exercise classes to bereavement counselling and therapy sessions online, hospices up and down the country have gone above and beyond to reach thousands of patients and families with the care they so desperately need.

And hospices have done all this while grappling with ever-changing guidelines, adapting to wearing full PPE, and not being able to touch or hug patients and families – an aspect that forms such an important part of care. The pandemic has taken its toll on hospice staff and patients, and yet hospices are still there when they are needed most.

“That’s why Hospice Care Week is so important. After an incredibly difficult 18 months, this is the time to say thank you. To celebrate our amazing hospice sector, to thank everyone for working so hard and to ensure these vital services can continue for everyone; no matter who or where they are.”
