There are so many ways to get involved: marshalling at an event; gardening; patient care; admin support; wellbeing and therapy; fundraising support groups, and much more. The support from volunteers really does allow us to make a difference. 

 

Fundraising Volunteer

We currently have vacancies for Fundraising Volunteers. 

Role Outline

Roles within the fundraising department can vary massively. Often in the run up to events and appeals certain tasks will be required to be completed in an all hands on deck approach. Tasks can be tailored to suit the volunteer and can vary between computer based and practical. Within the department admin based tasks such as database entry, answering the phone and filing are available. Finance roles can also be completed with money handling and counting being done regularly.  The team plan and organise upcoming fundraising activities and events; researching, collection tin and bucket preparation, display making and event preparation are some of the tasks that are available. 

Commitment

This role is very flexible to suit the volunteer however we would need a time commitment of at least once a fortnight, ideally once a week.

How we will help you

Tasks can be given that suit the volunteer’s interests and skillset. To use the database system training will be required. Volunteers will be supported and guided by the fundraising department.

Volunteer Gardener

Saint Catherine's is currently looking for a Volunteer Gardeners to maintain the gardens at Saint Catherine's Hospice Throxenby Lane site or its satellite Day Hospice at Whitby, our Gardening teams ensure that the gardens are relaxing and pleasant spaces to be used by all who attend or visit Saint Catherine's.

Duties are:

  • Maintain gardens, grass cutting, weeding, planting, pruning, potting out, and other garden related tasks.
  • To ensure that duties are carried out safely and with consideration for service users.
  • To prepare the gardens for special events, e.g. sunflower appeal, summer fair.
  • To ensure that tools and equipment are in good working order.
  • To attend mandatory training, team meetings and volunteer support meetings
  • To uphold the principles, policies, procedures and core values of Saint Catherine's Hospice
  • To maintain absolute confidentiality at all times

Volunteer Housekeeper

Saint Catherine's is recruiting for volunteer housekeepers to support the housekeeping team on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The housekeeping team provide all of the cleaning and laundry services to the hospice during day time hours. The role is varied and interesting, and involves regular contact with patients and their families, as well as providing for the needs of the non-patient areas and education centre.

Duties are:

  • Cleaning wherever required within hospice buildings, according to the schedules.
  • Laundry – collecting, transporting, sorting, cleaning, ironing, and all other aspects of the care and preparation of laundry, as required.
  • Assistance with the maintenance and sewing of linen etc, as appropriate.
  • Care, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment used in housekeeping work.
  • Assist with flower arranging, as appropriate.

Saint Catherine's is recruiting for shop volunteers to cover various Saint Catherine's shops. Each Saint Catherine's shop is different but duties will include:

  • Sorting through donations and picking suitable items for sale.

Support Group Volunteer

Saint Catherine’s Fundraising Groups

We have several Fundraising Groups located in Saint Catherine’s area. Fundraising groups run regular events such as coffee mornings and bake sales as well as larger scale events such fashion shows and dinner dances. The large area that Saint Catherine’s work covers offers ample opportunities for new groups and new ideas.

Fundraising Groups are made up entirely of volunteers. A Fundraising Group can be a group of friends who want to fundraise, or people who come together with the same passion for supporting the Hospice.

Fundraising Groups are all run differently to suit their group members, but we recommend assigning some group roles, key group roles can be found overleaf. Structured meetings, documentation and yearly fundraising plans are recommended. We suggest that 5-12 group members is an ideal number.

Community Volunteer

We currently have vacancies for Community Volunteers. 

Community Fundraiser tasks

As a community fundraiser various tasks can arise such as displaying posters in the area and aiding the team to support the communities' fundraising events. In some cases a presence at an event is required; this could be to give a small talk or to thank. The collection of money from supporters who have fundraised funds is sometimes required, this may be in the form of a cheque presentation.Saint Catherine’s has over 800 collection tins in the area in local shops and businesses. Tins often require changing and procedures for tin collections should be followed when doing so. Distributing new tins is also important and knowledge of the area is very beneficial.

How we will help you

This role is very flexible and is adjustable to suit the volunteer. This role will work closely with a member of the fundraising team who will provide you with support and guidance. The role will be based around the volunteer’s local area and travelling to the hospice isn’t always necessary.

Volunteer Catering Assistant

  • To assist in the preparation of vegetables etc. for the main meals

Saint Catherine's is currently looking for a volunteer physiotherapist. The volunteer, working in conjunction with the Junior, Senior and Specialist Physiotherapists, will develop and use clinical skills in the management of palliative care patients within the Hospice area, under the guidance of the Therapy team. The volunteer will mainly be assisting the Physiotherapy team on the In-Patient Unit, but they may be required to assist in the Day Hospice also. You will ensure a patient centred and holistic approach to patient care. The volunteer will mainly provide support to the Junior and Senior Physiotherapists as required.

Volunteer Secretary for Trustee Board and Committee

The Charity’s Trustees provide strategic direction, guidance and challenge whilst the Chief Executive is responsible for advising and assisting the trustees with the development of Saint Catherine’s Hospice strategic plan and ensuring the implementation and delivery of its aims and objectives.

Wellbeing Centre Activities Coordinator

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and creative volunteer who can co-ordinate and develop a programme of activities for Wellbeing Centre patients and carers.

 

The role involves working with the Wellbeing team to create and organise a programme of engaging activities for patients attending the Wellbeing Centre. The activities provided will need to be varied and cater for all patients. The aim is for the sessions to allow patients to participate as their capability allows, with minimal supervision from qualified staff.

 

The Wellbeing team will highlight specific activities that are felt to be of benefit to the patients including diversional therapies and activities with purposeful meaning.  Activities will also need to be developed and adjusted in response to patient feedback. The activities co-ordinator does not need to be skilled at any activity or able to deliver activities themselves.

 

In addition to helping create the programme of activities, the activities co-ordinator’s will help us to find new, exciting and benificial people or groups to deliver the further activities.  Members of Hospice clinical staff may be involved in creating and delivering some activities, but will not routinely be involved with the organisation of the programme.

 

The sessions for patients run on Monday afternoons. The time required for this role is approximately 3-4 hours per week and may include additional meetings at intervals with the Wellbeing Team. This role has the potential to grow and more time may be required as the Wellbeing Centre develops but this can be discussed on a on-going basis.

 

Tasks We will require you to:

  • Maintain a high level of patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Prepare a timetable of activities for the Wellbeing Centre that caters to all patient groups (Monday PM, Wednesday & Thursday)
  • Work with the occupational therapist to ensure that activities are appropriate and can be accessed by as many patients as possible
  • Locating and inviting people willing to provide activities such as creative activities (art, craft, music, singing), gardening, exercise, relaxation, demonstrations, performances and other engaging activities
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary team in order to engage them in providing specific activities.
  • Keeping a database of people willing to provide activities, (names, addresses, telephone numbers and their activity area.)
  • Meeting and greeting people providing activities if necessary and making sure that they have everything they need in order to provide the activities
  • Support and supervise volunteers to assist in delivering the activities
  • Motivate patients and carers to participate in activities while respecting individuals choices and preferences
  • Monitor the use of and ensure necessary supplies are available for people to run sessions
  • Occasionally source and buy necessary items within the agreed budget for activity expenses
  • Work with Fundraising teams to identify opportunities for grants/funding streams to develop activities

It is not anticipated that gardening sessions will be run every week throughout the year and so we would be happy to negotiate and agree specific dates for sessions.  Flexibility would also be welcomed to allow arrangement of sessions in response to patient demand. 

All activities are offered free of charge and there is a limited budget for materials.  Activities will, therefore, need to be low cost or will require sponsorship or funding via an identified grant.  Volunteers can work with the Volunteer Activities Coordinator to explore relevant opportunities.

Beauty Therapist Volunteer for Wellbeing Centre

We are looking for volunteers who can provide beauty therapy services for patients who attend the Wellbeing Centre. These services will be part of a wellbeing programme of activities designed to improve patient and carer wellbeing and quality of their life.  It enables patients who are not easily able to get to beauty salons, or who are self-conscious about their appearance, to have their treatments done in a private and sensitive manner.

Hours of work are likely to be for 2-3 hours either morning (9.30 – 12noon) and/or afternoon (1.30pm – 4pm) on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.

The beauty therapist would be expected to provide a limited range of treatments to Wellbeing patients and their carers, e.g., manicures.  All treatments must be delivered in accordance with infection control guidance and treatment guidelines including contraindications.

All services are offered free of charge.  We are able to ask for donations towards the costs of treatments but this would not be obligatory and we would not wish to specify amounts. 

Demand for beauty therapy services will vary.  If there are not many patients requiring beauty services during the time you have volunteered, please feel free to chat to other patients, other volunteers and staff and help out with activities, giving drinks etc. if you wish.

A room will be made available for you to use, however please be aware that this could be the hairdressing salon, therefore you will be working alongside the volunteer hairdresser.  Please set up the room as you like it (in liaison with the volunteer hairdresser if applicable) and please leave the room and equipment clean and tidy before leaving. Should you wish to use any of your own electrical equipment this needs to be PAT tested by our maintenance staff prior to being used and you must make sure all equipment is clean and fit for use.

You must have liability insurance and provide your own product.

Complementary Therapist Volunteer for Wellbeing Centre

We are looking for a volunteer to work in conjunction with the Complementary Therapist to develop and use skills in the management of palliative care patients within the Hospice area. The volunteer will be responsible for providing therapies to patients on the In-Patient Unit and in the Wellbeing Centre under guidance of the Complementary Therapist. The volunteer will ensure a patient centred and holistic approach to patient care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To be a full member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) for at least 2 years with Combined Medical Malpractice and Public Liability for Therapists insurance.
  • To demonstrate a sound understanding of Complementary therapies and in-particular the therapies for which the volunteer therapist is qualified to practice.
  • To practice the therapies which have been agreed, carry out administrative or any other duties as required and appropriate, in accordance with the Policies and Procedures of Saint Catherine’s as a member of the Complementary Therapy team.
  • To provide holistic assessments and treatments to patients on the In-Patient Unit and those attending the Wellbeing Centre utilising appropriate therapeutic skills with support from the Complementary Therapist.
  • To become confident in managing a small caseload, with supervision from the Complementary Therapist.
  • To be committed to develop skills and knowledge related to the care of patients with active, progressive and advanced disease, palliative care needs and the needs of their family and carers.
  • Maintain awareness of current good practice relevant to the service.
  • Monitor outcomes of Complementary Therapy provided and review as appropriate.
  • To provide relevant advice and information for patients and carers with support from the Complementary Therapist.

Following recruitment & initial induction you will be supported by the Nursing Team and Senior Nurses.

Key Duties

  • Complete the role induction and training to a satisfactory level
  • The ability to provide cover on one of the shifts noted* on an as needed basis *9.00hrs – 13.30hrs, *14.00hrs – 16.00hrs & *17.00hrs – 20.00hrs
  • Work as part of a team to maintain and deliver high standards of service, reflecting the beliefs outlined in the hospice philosophy
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times
  • To attend mandatory training, team meetings and volunteer support meetings

Volunteer PAT Tester

 

Experience required

PAT certified training and qualification desirable

Retired or ex electricians

Outline of role

We are looking for experienced PAT testers to assist in the testing of electrical equipment for re-sale and use in our retail outlets

Key tasks

  • Testing all electrical items for sale to ensure they comply with Trading Standards regulations and that they are safe goods
  • To test all electrical items in use in the shops, annually, in order to comply with regulations
  • To keep records of all items tested in order to comply with regulations

Other important information

  • All volunteers are required to undertake Mandatory Training
  • We will require you supply proof of qualifications

Admin Volunteer

Our Bereavement Service is looking for an admin volunteer to assist with general admin tasks.

The volunteer must be computer literate and have experience and knowledge of Excel. Experience of SystemOne would be desirable but not essential.

Duties include date input, mail merge, photocopying etc.
