From loss comes love in action. In memory of her dear friend Ray Francis MBE, Louise Brown is taking on an incredible 1,500-mile walking challenge, raising vital funds for Saint Catherine’s in recognition of the care that meant so much.
Louise will walk an extraordinary 1,500 miles between April and August, honouring Ray, who was cared for at Saint Catherine’s before he passed away on New Year’s Eve.

Ray lived a remarkable life of service and kindness. A veteran who served his country in the army for 23 years, he was even mentioned in dispatches for his dedication. After leaving the army, he became a prison officer, where his compassion continued to shine — so much so that a prisoner nominated him for an MBE in recognition of his charitable work.

Throughout his life, Ray supported a number of causes close to his heart, including the Special Olympics, Prison Service Games, Riding for the Disabled and Parkinson’s UK.
In November 2025, Ray became unwell and was cared for at Saint Catherine’s over the Christmas period. For Louise, the care he received, and the support given to those around him, left a lasting impression.
Now, she is honouring his memory through a challenge filled with meaning. Louise plans to walk 100 miles each week for 15 weeks, reflecting the 15 nights Ray spent at the hospice. The total distance of 1,500 miles also represents the approximate cost of providing 24 hours of care for a patient at Saint Catherine’s.
April holds particular significance too, as it marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month — a condition Ray lived with. The challenge is also deeply personal, as Louise takes it on in her 58th year, with the total distance equating to an incredible 58 marathons.
Louise said:
“I hope to raise as much money for Saint Catherine’s as possible. The work they do is amazing, not only for the patients but for the family as well.”
She is being supported every step of the way by her friends at Bridlington Veterans Group and hopes to raise both funds and awareness as she completes her miles out in the local community.
