There were smiles, laughter and plenty of excitement on Castle Suite this week when a very special visitor arrived at Saint Catherine’s.
When patient Joanne was asked by our Occupational Therapy team to create a wishlist of things she would like to do, one wish stood out – she wanted to meet a donkey. Determined to make that wish come true, the team set to work and, thanks to the kindness of Peter Rogers, Helen Rogers and Ann Rogers, Joanne’s wish soon became a reality. Helen and Ann brought along Jacko the donkey for a visit to Saint Catherine’s, creating a memorable experience not only for Joanne but for many others across the unit.
As word spread that Jacko had arrived, patients, visitors and staff all had the opportunity to meet him. Before long, the garden was filled with smiles, laughter and conversation as people shared the experience together. What began as one patient’s wish quickly became a special afternoon for everyone involved.
Our Occupational Therapy team regularly encourages patients to create wishlists, helping them identify experiences, activities or goals that are important to them. Wherever possible, the team works alongside patients, families, volunteers and supporters to make those wishes happen, creating meaningful moments and lasting memories. For Joanne, meeting Jacko was a wish fulfilled. For others, it was an unexpected opportunity to enjoy something different, spark conversations and share a moment of joy.
It was a heartwarming day that demonstrated the power of person-centred care and the difference that small acts of kindness can make.
A huge thank you to Peter Rogers, Helen Rogers and Ann Rogers for bringing Jacko to Saint Catherine’s and helping create memories that will be treasured.
