When caring for a loved one becomes part of everyday life, finding time to rest can feel impossible. For Amanda, Saint Catherine’s respite service provided reassurance, support and a chance to recharge while her dad Ray enjoyed comfort, companionship and care that felt like a break of his own.
When Amanda and her dad Ray moved to the coast six years ago, it was to follow a dream. After the loss of Amanda’s mum, who was cared for by a hospice in her final days, the family wanted a fresh start together by the sea. That experience had already shown them the difference compassion can make at the most difficult of times. They just never expected to need that kind of support again so soon. In 2024, Ray was diagnosed with both prostate cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. Once incredibly fit and active, even climbing Ben Nevis at 74 alongside seven family members to raise money for charity, his health began to decline rapidly. Now 81, Ray is on oxygen 24 hours a day and is largely housebound. Yet despite everything, Amanda describes her dad as “the most loving, positive person you’ll ever meet” — still sociable, young at heart, and always ready for a chat.

Caring for someone you love around the clock is both a privilege and a heartbreak. Amanda, who has worked in the care profession for most of her life, understands this deeply. “I’ve been in care all my working life,” she says, “but caring for a loved one 24 hours a day is difficult and heartbreaking at times.” When Amanda and her husband had a holiday booked for 2025, it became clear Ray wasn’t well enough to be left at home alone. It was Ray himself who encouraged them not to cancel. “He knew we needed the break,” Amanda explains. “I wanted the very best care possible for Dad and peace of mind so we could properly switch off. I felt happy that Dad was having a ‘holiday’ too.”
Around that time, Saint Catherine’s had just launched its respite service, short stays designed to give families time to rest and recharge. From the moment Amanda made the call, she knew it was right. The hospice’s peaceful setting, en-suite rooms and garden access gave immediate reassurance.
“It just had such a lovely atmosphere of care and compassion. Every member of staff wanted Dad to have the best experience and make sure he had everything he needed.”
Ray quickly settled in and began to thrive. He enjoyed daily spa baths and time chatting with staff. During his stay, he enjoyed a special day out to Thornton-le-Dale, visiting Mathewson Classic Cars — a highlight that gave him joy, independence and normality. The Flavours Bistro team also prepared his favourite meals, helping his appetite return after months of weight loss. Family visits confirmed just how well he was doing, giving Amanda priceless peace of mind.

Saint Catherine’s respite service is available for adults (18+) living with a long-term condition. Referrals can come from individuals, families or healthcare professionals. For Amanda, it wasn’t just a break, it was knowing her dad was somewhere he felt valued, safe and genuinely cared for.
“We’ve always had a positive attitude towards hospice care because of our experience with my mum, but I would highly recommend respite care at Saint Catherine’s. We’re so grateful for all the care and support we’ve received.”
The family now hopes Ray will return for another “holiday” soon with us because to him this is a place of comfort, dignity and companionship. Saint Catherine’s respite service continues to give families like Amanda’s the chance to rest, knowing their loved one is in safe and compassionate hands.
