At 90 years young, Scarborough’s very own Barry (or “Bazza” as he’s fondly known) is proving that adventure doesn’t come with an age limit. While most of us might be enjoying a quiet life by that stage, Barry is gearing up for an extraordinary feat of endurance and heart, a 19-mile solo canoe from Whitby to Scarborough, all in support of Saint Catherine’s Hospice.

An Unstoppable Spirit

Taking place on Saturday 9th August 2025, (weather dependant) the challenge will see Barry set off from Whitby Harbour and paddle his way down the rugged and beautiful Yorkshire coastline, finishing at Scarborough’s South Bay. His route hugs the coastline that links together many of the communities touched by the care of Saint Catherine’s. And he won’t be doing it alone, his sons Mark and Heath, and his daughter Kathy will each be joining him in their own canoes, helping to support their incredible Dad every stroke of the way.

This is no gentle Sunday row. It’s a non-stop, 19-mile journey, battling the elements and the tide, a test of resilience, stamina, and sheer determination.

More Than Just a Paddle, It’s a Legacy

This isn’t Barry’s first time going the extra mile for Saint Catherine’s either. Over 20 years ago, he took on a similar challenge to raise funds for the hospice. Now, two decades on, he’s stepping, or paddling, back into the spotlight for the same cause, showing that his commitment to the community hasn’t wavered one bit.

Barry’s challenge is not only a personal milestone, it’s a heartfelt tribute to the role Saint Catherine’s plays in the lives of so many families across Scarborough and the surrounding areas. His paddle is a way of saying thank you and making sure that the support the hospice provides can continue long into the future.
