Malton Farmer Becomes a Lucky Lottery Winner

“I Just Can’t Believe It!”

Every Friday, Saint Catherine’s Hospice holds its weekly lottery, giving supporters a chance to win big while helping local patients. This week, the lucky lottery winner is someone who’s as much a part of the Malton community as the charity shop itself: 71-year-old retired farmer, Derrick Warters.

Derrick, who often visits the shop with his nine-year-old rescue dog, Babe, was stunned to discover he had won £5,500 from a £2 ticket.

“When I saw the winning number, I thought, ‘Am I seeing this right?’” he laughed. “I asked my wife Valerie to check, but she didn’t have her glasses on and said I’d won £550. When we looked again, we just couldn’t believe it!”

A regular visitor at the Malton shop, Derrick enjoys catching up with shop manager Denise Millington and the team of volunteers every week. “The staff and volunteers are brilliant – we really enjoy coming in to see them,” he said.

With the winnings, Derrick is planning to treat Valerie to some UK holidays, following her cheeky advice to “blow it and enjoy it.” But even without the lottery, Derrick has always been generous, raising funds for various charities by selling fruit and kindling from a stall at his garden wall. These days, his efforts go to Saint Catherine’s.

Denise added, “It’s always lovely to see Derrick, and we have a laugh about checking his age to see if he’s old enough to buy a lottery ticket! This lottery winner couldn’t have been nicer.”

Susan Stephenson, fundraising operations coordinator, said, “Meeting Derrick and celebrating his win was a real pleasure. Our lottery is one way supporters can contribute to patient care, and hearing the stories of our lottery winners always makes our day.”

The Saint Catherine’s Hospice lottery is open to anyone over 18, with tickets priced at just £2 per play. Weekly prizes include £1,500, £200, £50, £25 x 2, and £10 x 10, plus a rollover that can reach £20,000. Tickets are available in all Saint Catherine’s charity shops, the Barn Boutique, Flavours Bistro, or via direct debit.
